WHETHER you view it as harmless fun, a bizarre form of animal torture or a sign that the whole pet-as-family-member idea has gone way too far, there's no denying the popularity of Halloween costumes for animals.

Even trick-or-treating -- once reserved only for children of the human kind -- has gone to the dogs.

Otherwise sane and well-adjusted people will answer their door on Oct. 31 with their cat in a fairy dress and their pup in a superman cape. And not just content to show off their costumed pets at home alongside the pumpkin, more and more people are actually parading their pets on the streets and taking them trick-or-treating with the kids.

(So make sure you have some dog biscuits handy along with those chocolate bars on Oct. 31.)

Karen McCullough, director of marketing for Petland Superstores, says the pet supply retailer's stock of costumes is almost sold out, so if you're still looking for an outfit for your furry, four-legged friend, you had better be quick.

"It's a growing trend," says McCullough. "Pets are part of the family, so parents are dressing them up and taking them out trick-or-treating with the kids. As well, a lot of adults who don't have children at home any more are now putting costumes on their dogs instead."

Halloween is coming soon and if you don't have a costume idea yet, here are some fun and easy costumes you can create without burning a hole in your wallet.

These classic costume ideas, courtesy of kidzworld.com, are guaranteed to frighten.

The first classic Halloween costume for you gents is Dracula.Â

You'll love flashing your scary fangs to your friends. All you'll need is a black cape, black clothes and white face make-up. Add dark eye liner around your eyes and drip some fake blood down your mouth and voom, ladies beware!Â Â Â

You'll have to sneak into the linen closet to get your one basic piece for this next costume.

Find a white sheet, and try not to make it the nice Egyptian cotton ones. You will need to cut two holes in them.

A spooky white ghost is the simplest, homemade Halloween costume you can create. If it seems too boring, find a creepy mask to go with your sheet or splash some fake blood all over it.

For the ladies, witch Halloween costumes are the best classic costume option.

Make the look your own and become a scary witch, a warty witch or a good witch. To be the typical scary witch, start off with a large-brimmed black pointy hat, put on a long black robe, and grab a broom.

After covering your face with green paint, add a big, warty rubber nose and the little one's will surely be spooked.

If being on the dark side is not your thing, think Glenda, from the Wizard of Oz. It's kind of a fairy look. You could wear a long puffy white dress, sparkly, glitter make-up and find a pretty wand, even a tiara or a crown.

A Pirates of the Caribbean theme is another great idea for the guys. Go as your favorite pirate. Choose from Captain Jack Sparrow, Captain Barbossa or any of the otherÂ crew men of the Black Pearl.

Find a white, ruffled button-up shirt, a pair of swashbuckling pants, a bandana and a plastic hook for your hand if you like. Pick up an eye patch and a plastic sword to finish off your costume.

Only a mad scientist can create a Frankenstein, but you can get the look. Spray paint your hair black and use gel to slick it down. Then paint your face green and use black eyeliner to add stitch marks and scars. To get Frankenstein's big, flat forehead, find a small piece of cardboard and fit it around your head.

All of these ideas are easy to create. Most of the clothing needed for these costumes you can find right in your closet. If not, try the thrift stores where there are lots of hidden treasures waiting to be discovered.

Phoood: Jones Soda Halloween 2007 Limited Editions: "2007 is another "Bertie Botts" Halloween for Jones Soda. In 8 oz portions, these are, no doubt, designed for novelty or Trick-o-Treating giveaway for kids (if you live in a "cool treats" neighborhood). The "new" flavor for 2007 is the "Lemon Drop Dead" soda, that tastes more sour than what has been released before under this name. The scent and flavor is very similar to Lemonheads brand candy. Yet with each gulp you're drinking the sweet and sour value of a small handful of Lemonheads. There's not much here but to say, "Gross!" That's almost a "gross in a good way" around kids. Almost.

On the other hand, the Candy Corn flavor is disgusting, even to kids. It's a hint of cotton candy burnt sugar taste coupled with artificial caramel flavor. Does real candy corn really taste this badly? Poured into a glass the "day glo" color even grossed out my kids (in a bad way). Gruesome Grape and Strawberry S'lime both taste like extra sweet, slightly more tart and garishly colored versions of fruity sodas you might enjoy elsewhere. These last two aren't great, but not awful either. Jones Soda's website says of its Limited Editions, "Don't Blink or You'll Miss Them." I suggest you blink instead of drink. If not, sip lightly.

Dream Halloween Los Angeles, an annual benefit for the Children Affected by AIDS Foundation, returns for "Under the Big Top," a circus-themed event and live auction that brings families and costumed celebrities together from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, October 27th, at the Santa Monica Barker Hangar, 3021 Airport Ave., Santa Monica. Strange things happen when existing franchises come under the wing of Harvey & Bob Weinstein. We've seen it happen with Halloween, when the sixth film – The Curse of Michael Myers – was given a re-shoot of the entire last third and an injection of Friday the 13th style gore. It's too bad that logic, character motivation and sensical writing were sacrificed in the name of Michael ripping a truck driver's head off, but what the hell, right?

Anyway, a few years after Hellraiser became a bona fide franchise with the release of Hellbound: Hellraiser II, the new division of Miramax Films known as Dimension was born. Dimension was created to distribute genre films like sci-fi, horror or comedy, while Miramax would focus on adding Oscars to the Weinstein mantles. Soon after Dimension's birth, the rights to Hellraiser were up for grabs, and so they were brought in to be a franchise face to the company just as Freddy Krueger was the franchise face to New Line Cinema.

Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth was a financially successful entry in the franchise, but fans were taken aback by the character of Pinhead morphing from a guardian of Hell to a supernatural serial slasher. They noticed that all of a sudden, Pinhead had the sort of powers that only the Lord of the Labyrinth originally had, like the ability to create Cenobites. And they feared that this once mysterious horror icon was going to fall in line with Freddy, Jason and Michael Myers and become more like them than Clive Barker ever intended.
